Back in 2017, Neymar smashed the world record for the most expensive transfer when he moved from Barcelona to PSG. The Paris-based club paid a monstrous 220 million euros to secure the Brazilian’s services. Neymar’s monthly wages are a ridiculous 600,000 euros and this is excluding bonuses.

Neymar’s ethical bonus

One such bonus which Neymar is entitled to is an “ethics bonus”. According to El Mundo, a Spanish newspaper that has been leaking the forward’s contract, PSG pay Neymar a whopping 543,680 euros monthly for simply being “courteous, punctual, friendly and available to fans” and not publicly critical of PSG.

To put this into context, the Parisian club pays the Sao Paulo-based striker 6.5 million euros yearly to greet fans before and after the match; and to not be critical of the club’s decisions and activity. According to the Spanish newspaper, the Ligue 1 club has so far spent 489,228,117 euros on their Brazilian superstar. This sum is almost double the amount they spent to secure his services from Barcelona.

Is UEFA doing enough?

The prospect of an ethical bonus certainly sounds ridiculous but for a rich club like PSG, such things are ordinary. According to reports, PSG rejected Real Madrid’s 220 million euros bid for Mbappe. The Frenchman is in the last year of his contract. With clubs like PSG and Manchester City spending tons of money and disrupting the market constantly, it is certainly a question to be asked if UEFA is doing enough to protect the game from financial imbalance.
