A group featuring all these regional powerhouses was aptly labeled the group of death and last night, we saw it in all its glory. The underlying sub-plot of the group was the battle of Lionel Messi against former manager, Pep Guardiola.

Lionel Messi scores his debut goal for PSG

Lionel Messi scored his first goal for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) against Manchester City in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday night. Messi scored in the 74th minute to increase PSG’s advantage over Pep Guardiola’s City, earning the Parisiens, a 2-0 victory over the Citizens.

Messi and Kylian Mbappe combined beautifully for Messi’s goal in the second half, taking advantage of the vast gap in Manchester City’s midfield. Their counter-attacking move helped the former Barcelona captain score his first goal for PSG. Messi’s debut goal for PSG sent the Parc des Princes into a frenzy.

“Today was an important moment” Messi after PSG’s win over Manchester City

Messi spoke to Canal + after the game. “I’m very happy to have scored,” Messi told the French broadcaster. He then explained how PSG needs time as they need to build chemistry. “I hadn’t been able to play recently and this was only my second game in this stadium. I’m adapting to my new team. The more we forwards play together the better our relationship will be. We all need to grow together and improve and keep giving our best.”

He then went on to highlight the importance of this match, especially after drawing against Club Brugge in their opener. “They were great opponents. It was very important for us to win the match after our [opening] draw against Brugge. I really wanted to get out there. I haven’t played much. I’m still getting used to my teammates, the team, and today was an important moment.”
