Sometimes, sport can transcend the capacity in which it is played and become so much more. It is a source of livelihood for every athlete who plays it, and it is a source of inspiration for the fans. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker reminded people of the very same thing in 2021.

The German goalkeeper lost his father during the COVID-19 pandemic and had been struggling with his form last year. However, in one of Liverpool’s most important matches of the season last year, he stepped up.

The Reds were playing against West Brom in the final minutes and needed a goal to qualify for the Champions League. Alisson stepped up from a corner as a last-minute Hail Mary and actually scored the goal. “I hope he was here to see it. I am sure he is celebrating,” Alisson said after the win.

Liverpool and their UCL run

The importance of this goal can truly be seen now when Liverpool have made it to the final of the Champions League. They were never supposed to be here, and Alisson’s goal completely changed the narrative of the season for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

They face Real Madrid in the final, a rematch of the 2018 edition of the tournament. Madrid won that game, courtesy of two blunders from Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius. However, the Reds bought Alisson from Roma that same season and won the UCL immediately.

It’s their title race in the Premier League that’s going to be one to look out for. Klopp’s men have to win both of their remaining games to have a chance to win the title. Manchester City have a four-point lead in the first place, but they have played one game more. It’ll be interesting to see how it all turns out at the end of the season.
