Things certainly aren’t going according to plan for Ghana at the African Cup of Nations. The African giants dropped points again in their second group stage match, leaving them in danger of not qualifying for the next stages. However, this draw would hurt a lot more than the defeat against Morocco in their first game.
Ghana faced Gabon in their second group stage game, needing to get all three points to be confident of progressing. Things were going well after captain Andre Ayew scored in the 18th minute to give them the lead, but Gabon found an equaliser in the 88th minute and the match ended in a draw.

A brawl that broke out between Ghana and Gabon
The equaliser was very controversial as Ghana had just kicked the ball out so that doctors could tend to their midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, who went down injured. However, Gabon did not give the ball back to them and scored from that exact same play.
While it is indeed a violation of fair play, Gabon didn’t break any soccer rules in getting their equaliser. Still, tensions were high between the two teams after that as Ghana felt cheated. Things reached a boiling point after full time as a brawl broke out between the two teams. Ghana’s Benjamin Tetteh was awarded a red card for punching someone in the scuffle.

Andre Ayew calls Gabon a small team
There was no love between the two teams as the captain and goalscorer for Ghana, Andre Ayew, talked about the incident in an interview afterwards. He called Gabon a small team and said that they’ll take this draw and try to win their next game.
“It’s small on their part, but that’s what small teams do, we put the ball into touch because our player was on the ground. In the fairness of football, when you then take [the throw-in] you give us back the ball, but they didn’t… and that’s why they scored,” said Ayew.
