Times are good in New York City as their soccer team, New York City FC recently won the MLS Cup 2021. The team finished as the fourth seed in their Eastern Conference and recorded three huge upsets to win the title in end. However, despite their win, it was the team’s manager Ronny Deila who caught all the headlines.

Ronny Deila has only been the manager of the club for one year, and he promised to strip to his underwear if NYCFC wins the MLS Cup. After his team beat Portland Timbers on penalties, Deila kept his promise and stripped. He also did a few push-ups and then proceeded to celebrate with his team and the trophy.

Ronny Deila talks about his celebration and might even do it again.

His celebration wasn’t something new for the Norwegian as Deila had previously stripped down after his club Strømsgodset avoided relegation under his management. Moreover, Deila promised to do it all again if NYCFC continue to win trophies.

You have to celebrate victories and today was a big victory. I said maybe too much when I got hired here, but I don’t regret that. It was a big moment and I will do it again if we keep winning trophies,” Deila said after his celebration.

This was the final match of the season and the stakes couldn’t have been higher. The match started wonderfully for NYCFC as Taty Castellanos scored a header in the 41st minute. It looked like their lead would stand throughout the match until a dramatic equaliser was scored by Portland Timbers’ Filipe Mora.

The game went to extra time but neither side could score a goal. It went down to penalties and NYCFC’s keeper Sean Johnson was the hero as he saved two penalties in the shootout. Alex Callens converted the last penalty kick of the match and the club celebrated winning the MLS Cup.
