Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg took the initiative to help a cause they believed in and walked out on the pitch with dogs in their hands instead of child mascots like they usually do. The club was playing against FC Rostov on Friday night when the whole thing transpired.

The club’s entire starting eleven walked out with dogs in their hands who were up for adoption. They were supporting a campaign called ‘Dogs are better at home’ as they wanted more dogs to be adopted in Russia. The nation celebrated World Pet Day on November 30, and Zenit St. Petersburg wanted to bring more eyeballs to the cause.

The response on social media was amazing and everyone had something good to say about the club’s idea. The Russian club’s English account thanked everyone for the response and put up a caption with a link to local dog shelters in the tweet.

Now let’s find homes for these good boys and girls. The aim of the project is to highlight to the public the responsibility and care required when having a pet and to help raise funds for local dog shelters,” the club’s account tweeted.

Zenit St. Petersburg and their prospects in Europe.

Next week, Zenit St. Petersburg will face Chelsea, the current holders of the UEFA Champions League, in the final game of group stages. The result of the match doesn’t really matter for the Russian club as they have already qualified for the Europa League and cannot qualify further to the knockout stages of the UCL.

However, facing Chelsea is another good opportunity for more people to watch and support their cause. The English club still needs to beat Zenit to secure their top spot in their group.
