Sofia Kenin continues to make 2020 a memorable year for herself. After shocking the world by winning the Australian Open, the American star has crossed another milestone. She has broken into the top 5 of the WTA rankings for the first time in her career.

Kenin achieved this feat by winning the inaugural edition of the Lyon Open. She is now ranked at the fourth spot in the world.

Even though she became a breakout star at the Australian Open, the follow-through has not been easy at all. Her performances at the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Qatar Open were underwhelming, to say the least. In fact, she lost out in the round of 32 at both the tournaments to lower-ranked players. Therefore, this performance will certainly make her more hopeful.

How did Sofia Kenin fare at the Lyon Open?

Even though the record books will show her as the champion, don’t be fooled into thinking that Sofia was performing at her best level. In a tournament with considerably lower-ranked players, Kenin had a much harder time than predicted.

In fact, four of her matches saw tight contests with them stretching to three sets. She prevailed over German player Anna-Lena Friedsam in the finals by a margin of 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. There were other major movements in the WTA rankings too.

Elina Svitolina also received a much-required shot in the arm with a title victory at Estadio Gnp Seguros. The Ukrainian had suffered a fair similar to Kenin at both the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Qatar Open. With a victory here, she has returned to the top 5 after the absence of less than a month. She is now ranked at no 5 in the rankings of the Women’s Tennis Association.

The players in the top 3 are Ashleigh Barry, Simona Halep and Karolina Pliskova respectively. Bianca Andreescu has finally been pushed out to number 6. All these rankings might see a major turnaround as tennis remains suspended due to the Coronavirus threat.
