Ahead of his anticipated NBA regular-season debut, Washington Wizards’ newest star AJ Dybantsa demonstrated the profound impact professional athletes can have off the floor. The top draft pick’s debut is under a shadow of doubt after a sudden injury. Yet fans are showing their love for the much-hyped rookie and he’s reciprocating it in meaningful ways.
Dybantsa has done every little thing to assure Washington fans that he’s committed to the team. Recently, he was attending a team event for fans where the 19-year-old forward went out of his way to comfort a grieving Wizards fan.
Identified online as Shawn-Paul Muth, the Wizards superfan and vocal Dybantsa supporter, shared the interaction online. Shawn lost his father this past weekend. His father was apparently a major sports fan of Washington’s teams, including this Wizards team and the Magic Johnson-owned NFL team, Commanders.
Amid deep grief, Muth celebrated his and dad’s shared love for the Wizards by attending the event. He later shared his story on social media alongside pictures of Dybantsa’s kind gesture.
“My dad passed on Saturday,” Shawn-Paul wrote. “I dragged myself to the wizards event even when it was hard to function. @AJ_Dybantsa was only signing one name the lady said. I told him about my father passing and the Paul in my name was his legacy. He signed the full thing. Thank you!”
Shawn-Paul added pictures of the signed jersey and a big smile from the gesture. But the rookie went a step further.
After he saw Shawn’s post, Dybantsa requoted it with a direct, heartfelt message of condolence, writing, “sorry for your loss man🙏🏾”
A deeply moved Shawn responded, “Thank you! I can’t wait to watch you on the court this year…. Basketball particular wizards basketball has always been my outlet and I’m excited to watch you take over the NBA. Much love.”
The exchange resonated deeply across the Washington basketball community. Fans were endeared by Dybantsa’s kind gesture which also cemented the belief he’s committed to the fanbase as much as the organization.
Shawn-Paul also provided a very moving footnote to AJ Dybantsa’s NBA debut. For months, he’s showed his excitement about the Wizards snagging the top draft pick and hyped Anthony Davis’ and Trae Young’s support for the rookie.
Simultaneously, he was coming to terms with his father’s declining health and posted about it. Just before attending the event, he had posted about one of the final memories he shared with his father involving a classic Wizards moments together.
“My dads not gonna make it and all I can do is provide him with comfort and maximize our time. Last night we watched @JohnWall first home game Dougie and relived that moment we were there. Had to show him @AJ_Dybantsa effort as well. He is cheering the @WashWizards on forever!”
The Wizards legend, John Wall himself reached out to the superfan with a message of support. “Sending you and your family love and strength. I’m glad you and your dad got to relive that special moment together. Praying you continue to find comfort in the memories and strength in the time you have together. ❤️🙏🏾”
Ahead of the NBA draft, before the Wizards could exercise their first overall pick, Dybantsa made a promise.
“If I go to DC, I’ll make the playoffs… I’m gonna make sure I make it,” Dybantsa said and immediately won over the fanbase.
Dybantsa’s compassion off the court mirrors the promise he has displayed on it since being selected No. 1 overall out of BYU in the 2026 NBA Draft. Across four preseason appearances, the 6’9 wing averaged 12.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.5 steals while shooting 43.9% from the field. Joining a renovated Washington roster featuring established veterans like Anthony Davis, Trae Young, Deandre Ayton, and Khris Middleton alongside a rising core, Dybantsa scored in double figures in every exhibition contest.
However, the rookie’s status for Wednesday’s season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks remains in question following an injury scare in Friday’s preseason finale against the New Orleans Pelicans. Dybantsa sustained a left ankle injury after landing awkwardly on a second-quarter jump shot, exiting after recording 12 points and two rebounds in 15 minutes.
Washington Wizards head coach Brian Keefe provided an update following Monday’s practice, classifying Dybantsa as day-to-day. Keefe confirmed that Dybantsa participated in light on-court shooting drills and emphasized that the medical staff will evaluate his recovery step-by-step.
Washington is required to submit its official injury report on Tuesday, which will determine whether the top overall pick will suit up for opening night.
Regardless of his game status for Wednesday, Dybantsa’s willingness to connect with fans on a human level has already cemented his place as a fan favorite in D.C.
