Southampton have accepted Liverpool’s improved offer of £12.5 million for right back Nathaniel Clyne, after having rejected earlier advances and a bid.
Brendan Rodgers has moved quickly in the transfer window with deals for Danny Ings, James Milner, Joe Gomez, Adam Bogdan and Roberto Firmino all but done & dusted, and with Nathaniel Clyne as the most likely addition to the Liverpool squad.
The England international has been granted permission to discuss personal terms with Liverpool and undergo a medical when he returns from his holiday in America. Clyne is expected to put pen to paper on a five year contract. The former Crystal Palace right back had snubbed Ronald Koeman’s offer of a new £45,000 a week deal.
Brendan Rodgers admitted that the 24 year old defender is the ideal replacement for Glen Johnson, who has left the club as a free agent.
Clyne was down to the final year of his existing contract and had made it clear that he wouldn’t sign an extension.
He played 35 games for Southampton last season, scoring a total of 2 goals. He was the most influential player in the side for the first half of the season
Clyne is a right back who can run down the flanks with speed and deliver crosses which could be prove to be effective for the Reds’ strike force. He can tackle well and has tremendous work rate.
