Stan Wawrinka Makes Early Exit From Geneva Open Before Entering French Open 2019

Damir Dzumhur topples world no. 27, Stan Wawrinka 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the Geneva Open. This was the third straight defeat for Stan Wawrinka against Damir Dzumhur.

Wawrinka won two consecutive Geneva Open titles in the 2016 and 2017 edition. However, he lost to Martin Fucsovics in the quarterfinals of the Geneva Open 2018.

Stan Wawrinka said after the shock defeat, “It looked good, but it didn’t finish well. It was a tough match out there for sure. Again, this is typically the match that I’m still losing, still missing.”

Stan Wawrinka was the clear winner in the first set but things changed in the second and the third sets. Wawrinka missed out on the crucial points in the second and third set.

The Swiss accepted that he did not play well after the first set. He said, ” I know I’m playing well, I’m moving well, but maybe I think a bit too much with what I want to do, how I want to do it, and I don’t play simple enough. Those little moments in the second set and third set turned the match. That’s what I’m working forward to change up.”

“Even if I lost today, in general, I’m playing well, so I need to keep pushing myself, keep trying to find a way to win those tight match, and I know that things can change quickly, ” Wawrinka added.

The 34-year-old did not have had the best clay season as he lost in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters. However, he reached the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrid Open, falling to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals. He made an early exit from the Italian Open 2019 as he was defeated by David Goffin in the first round.

Stan Wawrinka will now move to the French Open 2019. Wawrinka lost to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in a thrilling five-setter at the first round of the Roland Garros 2018. The French Open 2019 qualifiers will be completed today and the draw will take place in the evening.

Stan Wawrinka was the winner of the 2015 edition of the French Open. He also reached the finals of the French Open 2017. It will be interesting to see where will stan be placed in the French Open 2019 draw.
