Fiorentina centre back Stefan Savic is set to join Atletico Madrid, as revealed by the player himself. Atletico have reportedly paid £8.3 million and midfielder Mario Suarez to the Italian club for the services of Savic.

“I’ve come to the end of this great adventure with Fiorentina,” the 24-year-old stated. “Now I’m ready for a new challenge with Atletico Madrid. I’m very sorry to leave Florence and my team-mates, I’ve got along with them very well over the years.”

“Now I’m ready for a new challenge with Atletico, I hope Fiorentina continue to fight to reach important objectives. I thank the President, the director Prade and everyone at the club. Ciao Florence and Forza Viola!”

Mario Suarez, on the other hand, had a frustrating last season, making only 11 starts for the Rojiblancos. As a result, he wanted a move out of Atletico, and has been granted his wish in the form of an exchange deal with Fiorentina.

Diego Simeone was keen on bringing a centre-half after Miranda left Atletico for Inter this summer, and has found his replacement. Savic, ahead of his medical on Monday night, was quick to praise his new manager , claiming that the Argentine is the best in the world.

“I’m very happy, Atletico’s a big club,” he stated at the Barajas airport in Madrid. “I will now pass the medical then I’ll be able to join the team. Simeone is the best coach in world football. I am excited to meet him and I hope to talk soon to discover what’s expected of me. I can’t wait to meet my new team-mates, I’m very happy to be here.”

Savic also insisted that Mario Suarez is a great signing for his former club Fiorentina, and wished the 28-year-old Spanish international luck, ahead of his new challenges in Italy. “Mario Suarez is a great player, he will certainly help Fiorentina achieve many successes.”

Savic made 38 appearances for the Tuscany side last season, scoring two goals and also assisting twice for them.
