Venus Williams found herself struggling with a left ankle injury and lost her second-round match against the 131st ranked Sara Errani at the Australian Open 2021. The match lasted close to an hour as Venus was thrashed, 6-1, 6-0.

Injury filled first set for Venus Williams

Venus failed to influence the match even before suffering an injury, yet she was still fighting and had break points in the second game, but Errani held on. From here, Errani extended her lead to 4-0.
Venus finally won a game at 4-1. But while receiving a shot, she rolled on her left ankle and struggled with pain. Trailing 5-1, 15-0, Williams took a medical timeout.

Sara Errani was in the driver’s seat from the start of the second set, even though Venus didn’t give up. Errani had taken a 2-0 lead and was trailing 0-40 on her serve. But made a good comeback to increase her stronghold to 3-0. Despite struggling with injury, Venus was looking to fight.
But Venus wasn’t influencing the set. The second set stretched to 5-0 in Sara Errani’s favor, and it looked like she would bagel Venus. The American was serving at 5-0 to avoid getting bageled, but Errani converted her second match point to complete the match 6-1, 6-0.
It is disappointing to see Venus bow out like this. She came into the Aussie Open after ending her winless run. Venus was on a 5-match winless streak and that finally ended at Yarra Valley Classic tournament held before the Aussie Open.

At the Australian Open, Venus won her first Grand Slam match since the 2019 US Open when she defeated Kirsten Flipkens in the first round. Despite playing in her 40s, Venus still has the fighting spirit. She soldiered on even though she was injured, and that is something that no one will ever forget.
