Well as the American Grand Slam champion, Sloane Stephens suffers an upset in the Asian city of Singapore, the Ukrainian, Elina Svitolina claimed the biggest title of her career. Svitolina received a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in two hours and 23 minutes in the championship match of the WTA Finals. She is the first player to go through the WTA Finals undefeated since Serena Williams in 2013. Svitolina steamrolled over the reigning champion Caroline Wozniacki, the Czech players Petra Kvitova and Karolina Pliskova at the group stage. She the Dutchwoman, Kiki Bertens in the semi-finals in Singapore. She has won her past nine finals on the WTA Tour and not lost one in the last two seasons.
Stephens made her first appearance at Singapore event. She won all three of her group matches and surpassed Karolina Pliskova in the semi-final.”It is not the way I wanted to finish but I worked really hard to get here and I can be really proud of my result today so I am really pleased with that,” she said. It was more of a mental game for Svitolina. After dropping her first set she did not let Stephens even to take the lead in the match. She converted half of her break points, going six for 12, while she saved nine of the 12 which she encountered during the match. “Today, not everything worked in the first set, but I fought back and that’s what brought me to the win today,” Svitolina said after the match. “I’m very proud of this.”
“It is amazing. I am very pleased with my performance this week,” Svitolina added. “There were nerves early on but I was just trying to fight for every ball and I think that made the difference in the end. Sloane played amazing tennis so I really had to play my best tennis to win”. The Finals held in Singapore was for the fifth and final time. Next year the tournament will be happening in the Chinese city of Shenzhen.
