Alexander Vladimirovich “Sasha” Povetkin is a Russian professional boxer who fights in the heavyweight division. He is a former heavyweight champion, having won the WBA (regular) title in 2013.

At present, he is the WBC interim heavyweight champion. A title he won after defeating Dillian Whyte in 2020. He also won an Olympic Gold Medal in 2004.

Povetkin is one of the best heavyweights in the sport. He sits at #3 on The Ring Magazine ranking, #4 on TBRB’s rankings, and #5 on ESPN’s. Povetkin is famous for his power despite being one of the smaller heavyweights.

He started as a kickboxer and won several amateur tournaments. This included the World Junior championship in 1997, World title in 1999, and a European professional kickboxing title in 2000. He then turned his focus to boxing and found more success. The biggest of this was his gold at the 2004 Olympic games.

Povetkin turned pro in 20o5 has had a very successful career. The pinnacle of which was his world title triumph. However, he has even challenged for the unified heavyweight championship of the world. However, he came up short both times against Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko.

2020 saw Povetkin beat Dillian Whyte in a shock result. As a result, he became the WBC interim champion. Therefore, 2021 could be the year the Russian challenges for the heavyweight title again. He will take on Whyte in the re-match after the initial date had to be pushed forward since he tested positive for Coronavirus.

The Russian has a respectable record of 36-2-1.  25 of these victories have come by knockout. This gives the Russian a 64% knockout ratio. Out of his two defeats, he has only been knocked out once. That was against Anthony Joshua.

Other than these fights, he has had other memorable bouts against the likes of Carlos Takam, Michael Hunter, David Price, among others.

The Russian has started his charity called The Renaissance Foundation. The charity aims at promoting sports and a healthy lifestyle among the youth. Even Wladimir Klitschko auctioned his fight short and donated the money to Povetkin’s charity.
