Volkanovski had four fights as an amateur. At 23, he decided to make a career out of mixed martial arts and defeated Gerhard Voigt in his first professional MMA bout.'The Great' went 3-0 before suffering his first and what would become his only MMA loss, and it came in the welterweight division. Alexander Volkanovski dominated his first five opponents in the UFC before fighting returning veteran, Chad Mendes. Although he faced some early adversity against Mendes, Volkanovski turned the tables and knocked him out. He was then matched up against the first UFC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo.

Alexander Volkanovski had his next fight in the main event of UFC 273 PPV against 'The Korean Zombie' Chan Sung Jung at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, United States. Moving on, 'The Great' once again faced his former rival Max Holloway at UFC 276. But the result wasn't much different.
