Volkanovski had four fights as an amateur at middleweight. At 23, he decided to make a career out of mixed martial arts. He dropped to welterweight and defeated Gerhard Voigt in his first professional bout.

'The Great' went 3-0 before suffering his first and only loss in his new career. After amassing thirteen wins in Australia, Guam, and New Zealand, Volkanovski finally made it to the United States. As of February 2021, he is at #6 in men's pound for pound rankings.

He dominated his first five opponents in the UFC before fighting returning veteran, Chad Mendes. Although he faced some early adversity against Mendes, Volkanovski turned the tables and knocked him out. He was then matched up against legendary featherweight, Jose Aldo.

As expected, he outclassed Aldo to win a title shot. Volkanovski received his first-ever title shot against former champion Max Holloway. Holloway was an impressive run in the featherweight division before the fight. However, Volkanovski conquered Holloway and the division.

The duo re-matched at UFC 251. Max Holloway looked strong in the early rounds. Many people thought he would win the fight. But, the judges did not see it that way and awarded the decision to the champion. There was a ton of controversy surrounding the decision post-fight. He is scheduled to make his second title defense against Brian Ortega on March 27, 2021, at UFC 260. He holds a record of 9-0 in his UFC career.
