Anthony Edwards

Anthony Edwards, the shooting guard out of Georgia was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, and trust us, he has more than lived up to the hype so far. The 6'4" Edwards has wowed fans and analysts alike with his athleticism and fearlessness attacking the rim, garnering comparisons to the great Michael Jordan already, both for his play style and grit. He seems to love mixing soaring dunks and creative finishes among his repertoire of step-back threes and silky mid-range jumpers. In the course of this regular season, Edwards has also really developed his outside shot, upping his three-point percentage to 36%. He currently wears the number five for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Anthony Edwards' early life and career

Born August 5, 2001, in Atlanta, Georgia, Anthony Edwards was raised by his mother, Yvette Edwards-Prempeh in the Eastlake neighborhood of Atlanta. By age 7, he started playing for an AAU team called the Atlanta Celtics. He also initially played youth football as a running back, quarterback, and cornerback.

Edwards transitioned to basketball after being inspired by his brothers and attended Therrell High School in Atlanta. Before his junior season, he transferred to Holy Spirit Preparatory School, and flourished there, averaging 29.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. Edwards was also named Georgia's Mr. Basketball and a McDonald's All-American.

Coming out of high school, it seemed he was already destined for big things. Edwards was a coveted five-star recruit ranked as the nation's top overall prospect in the 2019 class by ESPN. Staying in-state, he attended the University of Georgia, and in his short stay there, averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game en route to SEC Freshman of the Year honors. This sizzling campaign paved the way for him to declare for the 2020 NBA Draft after one year of college.

After being one of the most sought-after prospects, the Minnesota Timberwolves drafted him with their number one overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Initially, he came off the bench for the Timberwolves, but injuries to starters gave him the chance to be part of the starting lineup. Notably, he was the highest draft pick by Minnesota since they took Karl-Anthony Towns 1st overall in 2015

In his rookie season, Edwards stepped into a starting role right away, averaging 19.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. He recorded a season-high 42 points against the Phoenix Suns in March and was also named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. His breakout season came in 2022-23, where he emerged as a bona fide star, averaging 24.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.6 steals. Edwards also earned his first All-Star selection, starting in the game for the West as he was a key part of the Timberwolves returning to playoffs at a 42-40 record.

He has solidified his starting spot after establishing himself as a reliable scoring option on the Wolves. At such a young age, and with this level of effort, athleticism, and potential, he can be one of the best wing players in the league in the years to come, having already received comparisons to the great Michael Jordan.
