Giovinazzi finished second in the 2015 Formula 3 European Championship. He scored his first points in Bahrain in 2013, and a maiden podium only came in 2015 at Hockenheim. He followed it up with another podium in Austria in Race 1, before winning Race 3. All in all, he took eight wins in his FIA Formula 3 European Championship career. Giovinazzi finished his final season in 2nd, losing to Felix Rosenqvist.

In GP2, he bagged five wins and three podiums to finish runner up again. This time, he lost to Pierre Gasly, who would go on to race in F1 in 2017.

He made his competitive debut for Sauber at the 2017 Australian Grand Prix, replacing the injured Pascal Wehrlein. He also replaced Wehrlein at the following Chinese Grand Prix as Wehrlein continued his recovery. Giovinazzi signed a contract to race full-time for Alfa Romeo Racing in 2019.

Giovinazzi ended the 2020 season in 17th place in the drivers' championship. He scored four points, the same number as teammate R?ikk?nen, however, R?ikk?nen placed above Giovinazzi by virtue of having more ninth-placed finishes.
