They call him ‘Funky’, a name that Ben Askren got in his college days because of his unorthodox wrestling style. He is one of those MMA fighters, who merged scrambling into wrestling to dominate his opponents. The multiple organization champion, Askren, is currently retired.
A medal at the Olympics was the goal of Askren growing up. However, his dreams were shattered in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China, when he lost his very first match against Ivan Fundora.
Instead of waiting another four years to compete at the highest level, Askren stepped foot in an MMA ring and made his MMA debut in a promotion called Headhunter Productions: The Patriot Act against Josh Flowers and got a quick finish.
Askren fought in Bellator Fighting Championship (now known as Bellator MMA). He became the Bellator welterweight champion and defended his title against some elite fighters such as Jay Hieron, and Douglas Lima.
Askren then debuted in ONE Championship and became the champion in his second match by beating Nobutatsu Suzuki. After defending his title 5 times, Askren retired from MMA. However, he came to the UFC after UFC and ONE FC traded Demetrious Johnson and Ben Askren.

Askren is one of the best wrestlers on the planet. He has made a career out of wrestling in a sport that is not wrestling. His Jiu-Jitsu is also on a higher level than his competition. Askren’s biggest weakness is his striking capability, and he has failed to master even the basic striking defense.
The fighter holds a proud record of 19-2-0,1NC in his career. Askren has won multiple championships in wrestling, disc golf, and submission grappling. Besides that, he was the former Bellator MMA and ONE welterweight champion.
Askren also won the Fight of the Night bonus one time against Demian Maia.
Askren has earned over $830,500 in his UFC career according to The Sports Daily. That is more than what an average star makes in the company. It is noteworthy that these numbers do not include undisclosed bonuses.
On May 6, 2019, Askren took on Jordan Burroughs in a charity wrestling match. Unfortunately, Askren lost the bout in a humiliating fashion.
