Born on 16th August 1996, his father Michael Dressel and his mother Christina Dressel raised him in Green Cove Springs, Florida. He has three siblings and attended Clay High School at Green Cove Springs, Florida.

In the meantime, his dream to become a professional swimmer was with Bolles School Sharks in Jacksonville. Likewise, his breakthrough came in 2012. The 15-year-old swam the 200-meters freestyle relay in less than 20 seconds.

Hence, after his incredible feat, Dressel competed in different swimming competitions. Significantly, he created the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships record in 2013 by winning six medals. Dressel's success continued as he attended the University of Florida from 2014 to 2018. The Florida-based swimmer won the 50-yard freestyle NCAA title in 2015.

The swimmer put forward incredible performances in the pool which earned him an Olympic call-up in 2016. The swimmer won two gold medals in the 4×100-meter freestyle and 4×100-meter medley relay at Rio Olympics 2016. This put him on the map as he competed alongside Michael Phelps in the relay competitions. Nonetheless, many fans dubbed him to be the next Phelps because of his dominance.

At the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, he won seven gold medals and created history. Moreover, this put the swimmer on the map. More medals continued with him winning five medals at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships.

In the meantime, his versatility, dominance, and power swimming continued at the 2018 World Short Course Championships. He won nine medals during that competition and further expressed his dominance during the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju. Dressel won six gold medals in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m, 50m butterfly, and 4x100m freestyle races while earning two silver medals in the 4x100m medley and 4x100m mixed medley.

In addition to his national career, the swimmer then signed for the Cali Condors from the International Swimming League and swam for the team.

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 was the stage for him to show his dominance. He was among the two captains for the US Swimming teams. Then he won five gold medals in the 50-meters freestyle, 100-meters freestyle, 100-meters butterfly, 4 × 100 meters freestyle relay, and 4 × 100-meters medley relay. The 100-meters butterfly race saw him setting a time of 49.45.
