Morikawa grew up playing the sport at the Chevy Chase Country Club, where he started working with his coach Rick Sessinghaus since he was eight and this partnership is still going strong. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in business administration. During his college career, he won five titles in four years. He also won amateur titles at the same time, which took him to the top of the amateur rankings.

Morikawa appointed J.J. Jakovac as his caddie in 2019. They met at the 2019 US Open at Pebble Beach and that's where they struck a partnership.
