Danielle Collins’s Career

The 30-year-old began her WTA career in 2009 but played in ITF tournaments for a few years. She managed to win her first ITF title, Williamsburg, in 2011. From 2013 to 2015, Collins was mostly focused on collegiate tennis and would not have her WTA Tour main draw in the 2014 US Open. She would lose to Simona Halep in the opening round but pushed her to a three-set clash.

She became a full-time professional in 2016 and would go on to play in seven more ITF finals. Out of the ones she played, she managed to win Williamsburg, Stillwater, Bethany Beach, and Norman.

Collins would have her first breakthrough in 2018 when she qualified for the main draw of all slams except Australia. She also displayed a fantastic performance in the Sunshine Doubles, reaching the semifinal in the Miami Open, which would be followed by first and second-round exits in WTA 1000 tournaments. She ended the year ranked 36, looking ahead to an even better 2019.

The American player began the year with a bang, reaching the semifinal of the Australian Open. However, she couldn’t repeat her feats on the rest of the WTA Tour but managed to jump to rank 31. With COVID-19 wreaking havoc in 2020, Collins would not play many tournaments besides the three grand slams held in the year, with a quarterfinal run in the French Open.

2021 would bring normalcy to her tennis stint, with the French Open and the US Open being her best slams. She also won her first and only WTA 250 and 500 tournaments, which were the Palermo Ladies Open and Silicon Valley Classic respectively. In 2022, Collins once again kickstarted the year with a fantastic run in the Australian Open, this time reaching the finals.

However, she would not be able to defeat Ashleigh Barty. Following the tournament, Collins managed a quarterfinal run in the season, which helped launch her rise to rank 7, the best of her career. 2023 would not be noteworthy, with the third round being her best result in slams and a quarterfinal in the Canadian Open being her best in the WTA Tour.

2024 started for Collins’ fans with a major announcement of her retirement after facing defeat to Iga Swiatek in the second round. So far, she is playing the best tennis of her life in the Miami Open, as she awaits to play her first WTA 1000 final.
