Deiveson Figueiredo is perhaps one of the most inspiring men in the UFC. The Brazilian had to go through great difficulties to make it to the promotion. Figueiredo previously held multiple jobs. He was a bricklayer, a sushi chef, and a hairstylist before becoming a martial artist.
He was raised in the tiny city of Soure, Para, Brazil. Until he was thirteen, Figueiredo worked as a cowboy with his father. He then moved to Belem and learned capoeira. He did not train in MMA until he was sixteen.
Deiveson Figueiredo started competing on the regional circuit of Brazil. He amassed an 11-0 undefeated streak before signing with the UFC. As of 2021, he is #9 in the UFC men’s pound-for-pound rankings.
His first fight with the promotion took place in Brazil itself. Figueiredo defeated Marco Beltrán to win his debut. ‘Daico’ won his next three matches before losing to Jussier Formiga. He bounced back with a decisive victory over Alexandre Pantoja in his next fight. After that, he defeated Tim Elliott to secure a title shot.
Deiveson Figueiredo fought Joseph Benavidez for the vacant flyweight championship on February 29, 2020. Figueiredo won the bout, but couldn’t claim the title as he had missed weight. Also, there was controversy surrounding an inadvertent headbutt.
Nevertheless, the duo fought again in July 2020. This time, Figueiredo put Benavidez to sleep via a rear-naked choke. He then went on to defeat Alex Perez and ended with a draw against Brandon Moreno. He holds a record of 9-1-1 in his UFC career.
Figueiredo does not waste any time once the cage door shuts. He throws caution to the wind and chases the finish. Every strike that he throws is meant to hurt his opponents. He will often eat a couple of strikes to land a few of his own. And he also possesses knockout power in his hands.
Striking is not his only strength. With a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Figueiredo is treacherous on the ground. He can find many ways to submit his opponent.
He holds a stellar record of 20-1-1 in his MMA career. Besides that, he won the Fight of the Night bonus against Alexandre Pantoja and the Performance of the Night bonus against Joseph Benavidez and Brandon Moreno. Not to mention, he is the reigning UFC flyweight champion.
Figueiredo has earned over $1,174,500 in his UFC career according to The Sports Daily. He made around a quarter of a million dollars for his second fight with Joseph Benavidez.
