Jermell De’Avante Charlo is an American professional boxer from Louisiana. Charlo, who fights in the super-welterweight category, is a unified champion with the WBC and WBA belts to his name. Jermell comes from a boxing family as his identical twin brother, Jermall Charlo, is also a world champion.

As of February 2021, Charlo sits at #1 on ESPN and TBRB’s rankings, while he is the Ring Magazine champion at 154 lbs. He goes by the nickname ‘Iron Man’.

Charlo started boxing at 8, when his father, an amateur boxer, took him and his brother to the boxing gym. Despite trying their hand at Basketball and Football in high school, they ultimately chose to box.

Jermell had a fairly successful amateur career. Just two years into the amateur scene, he secured the Bronze at the Junior Olympic Games. He finished with a respectable 56-8 record and turned pro in 2007.

His professional career got off to an impeccable start. He won his first 31 fights on his way to the WBC super-welterweight title that he won in 2016. After a controversial hiccup against Tony Harrison in 2018, Charlo bounced back in 2019 and won his belt. He went one better and added the WBA belt in 2020 by beating Jeison Rosario.

2021 could be a defining year for the champion as he chases undisputed glory in the light-middleweight category. He will box Brian Castano in July 2021.

As of February 2021, Charlo’s record stands at an impressive 34-1-0. Out of these 34 victories, 18 have come through knockouts. This shows the type of fighter Charlo is as he isn't afraid to the bout to the judges’ scorecards. His only blemish is one that the majority will feel should not be there. When the judges controversially ruled in favor of Tony Harrison.

Other than these fights, the younger twin has had his fair share of big fights. He had fought the likes of Gabriel Rosado, Erickson Lubin, among others.

Jermell Charlo: Foundation and Charity

The champion is no stranger to doing his bit for charity. He once raised $9,000 for a child in need through a sparring session. However, to date, this is the only public charitable act that we know of.

According to Sportekz, the younger of the twins is valued at $1.75 million as of 2021. The fighter received a whopping $1 million each for his fights against Tony Harrison and Jeison Rosario.
