Before taking up the sport professionally, Santa Cruz won back-to-back gold medals at the International Junior Olympics Tournament in the years 2004 and 2005. He also claimed silver at the U.S. National Championship in 2006

He turned professional at the age of 18 and has gone on to claim titles in 3 different weight classes. 'El Terremoto' still has sufficient time left in the sport and will look to carve out a niche for himself and claim titles in many more divisions.

Leo Santa Cruz: Record

'El Terremoto' has put together a 37-2-1 record. He started off his journey at bantamweight and went undefeated in 19 fights to earn his first full title shot. In this time, he claimed the WBC Youth interim bantamweight title vs Stephane Jamoye. The gold cemented the then 22-year-old as a top prospect in the bantamweight division.

'El Terremoto' won the IBF bantamweight title against Vusi Malinga and made 4 successful defenses. Subsequently, he moved up to super bantamweight and earned a championship bout against Victor Terrazas.

Leo Santa Cruz fought for a title in a third weight class in 2015. He triumphed over Abner Mares to claim the WBA (Super) featherweight title.

At this weight class, 'El Terremoto' faced adversity and suffered his first and only professional defeat. British pugilist Carl Frampton claimed a majority decision win.

'El Terremoto' returned the favor just 5 months later and claimed the super featherweight title in 2019 vs Miguel Flores. However, Santa Cruz lost his title to Gervonta Davis in 2020 after he was viciously knocked out.

Despite this, 2021 could be a career-defining year for the Mexican. It may be the last time we see the talented fighter compete for a world title.

Leo Santa Cruz: Foundation and Charity

Santa Cruz's trainer and father Jose Santa Cruz suffered from cancer. As a result, he is always keen to be a part of initiatives to spread awareness about the condition.

He appeared at a #Bat4Hope Celebrity Softball game in 2016. The event was held with all proceeds going to the Padres Contra El Cancer. It helped raise awareness about Childhood Cancer and Leo Santa Cruz claimed that it was an honor to be associated with the event.

The pugilist held the event to give back to those who helped him out, as well as help out those who suffer from cancer.
