Marvin Bagley III was born in Tempe, Arizona on March 14, 1999. Bagley played high school basketball for Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, where his game earned him a college basketball scholarship at the age of 14.

In 2017, he successfully made himself eligible to play college basketball for the Duke University after reclassifying himself as a graduate from Sierra Canyon. By the end of his first college Basketball regular season, Bagley was named both the ACC's Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year, as well as a member of the All-ACC first team. He was also named a consensus member of the All-American First-Team by multiple organizations.
