From Juvenile centers to boxing rings to Oil rigs and then back to the boxing ring, Ryan Bourland has gone a long way to come home. The California-born pugilist has had a varied life both in and out of the ring. As he steps into the ring on March 2nd against Jake Paul, let us know about the man who will take on the biggest challenge of his life yet.

Who is Ryan Bourland?

Ryan Bourland is a semi-retired former Golden Gloves champion, National Junior Olympian, and two-time GBO Light Heavyweight champion. At the age of 25, he transitioned to professional boxing. “The Rhino” has since compiled a record of 17-2 with six knockouts, capturing the regional light heavyweight GBO title along the way. Having last fought in 2022 against Santario Martin, the North Dakota-based fighter remains in the shadows of the cruiserweight class. Despite showing promise, Ryan Bourland retired from boxing in 2018 to move to North Dakota to work on oil rigs. He made a brief comeback to the ring in 2022 and then returned to North Dakota until the call from  Jake Paul's Most Valuable Promotions.

Ryan Bourland’s Early Life

Born on June 17, 1988, Ryan Bourland grew up in Vallejo, California, in a white, working-class neighborhood. He lived in a family of five, with his two other siblings. The fighter spent his formative years surrounded by a diverse neighborhood, with his elementary middle schools being heavily charged with racial politics. In an interview, he once noted, “The white kids and the Black kids fought all the time over nothing.”

As a young boy, he was a lovable bully who would fight the kids who picked on other kids. He once said, "I don’t like to see people who are vulnerable being made fun of – it really gets to me." As a result, he was constantly embroiled in fights with other children.

The young Bourland also had an anger problem. He was then enlisted in a youth boxing program where he learned how to box. Things started getting better as he took to the program. However, the problem worsened when his parents divorced. “The divorce got me all torn up,” he said. He started getting into more fights.

Bourland then started getting into trouble with the law. “I did a lot of stupid stuff,” he noted. Having been in juvenile hall fifteen times before it, the young Bourland was locked up in the California Youth Authority from age seventeen to eighteen. The details of these offenses are unknown, but once he was released from the center, he was arrested yet again. Twice, actually for DUIs, and the court sent him to a rehabilitation program for alcoholism.

During that program, a counselor suggested he begin training at a nearby boxing gym, relieving him early in the evenings to facilitate the process. Boxing helped him phase out the unfavorable company he spent his days with. “I had gained a lot of weight – I was about 250 pounds…at the gym, I started losing weight, getting strong, and taking control of my life,” he recalled. Bourland started seeing the results of his work in the way his body began to look and he liked the changes.

Ryan Bourland’s Wife and Kids

Ryan Bourland lives in Dickinson, North Dakota, where he works as a welder and a boxing coach. He is happily married to Jessica Bourland. They are parents to two children, a son named Ryan Jr. and a daughter named Rylee.

Bourland is also a practicing Christian and credits his faith to providing him "the strength and courage to face my challenges and to pursue my dreams."

According to different sources, Ryan Bourland's net worth stands at around $500,000, as of 2024. He earns most of his income from his boxing coaching jobs as well as some from his welding jobs.

Ryan Bourland’s Career Timeline

The 35-year-old started his professional journey at the age of 25 in the year 2013 against Jose Hurtado. He won the bout via a unanimous decision. He won the next six fights until his first loss at the hands of Israel Duffus in 2015 when he lost via a knockout. Bourland then went on a 10-fight win streak, including a rematch with Israel Duffus, whom he defeated via a split decision in 2017.

Bourland also won a GBO Light heavyweight title, a second time in 2018 by defeating Gilberto Rubio via a unanimous decision. However, in 2019 he faced another setback when he lost his title to Marco Delgado by a split decision. He was also seriously injured in his eye which forced him to undergo an eye surgery that kept him out of the ring for almost 4 years.

Bourland came back to the ring in 2022 to face Santario Martin in a cruiserweight bout. He knocked out Martin in the fourth round of their match to improve his record to 17-2.
