Steven Adams was born in Rotorua, New Zealand to a Tongan mother and an English father. Born on July 20, 1993, Adams stayed in New Zealand till 2011.
In 2011, He played for his hometown team Wellington Saints of the National Basketball League (NBL). After playing one season, Adams moved to the United States in 2012 to play college basketball for Pittsburgh. In June 2013, he was drafted by Oklahoma City Thunder with the 12th overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft, which made made him the first New Zealand player to be selected in the first round of NBA draft.
