Survivor Series

WWE Survivor Series: WarGames 2023 will take place on November 25, 2023. The 37th Annual PLE will be held at the Allstate Arena in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois. With the unique WarGames match type set to make its second appearance on the main roster, fans are hyped and excited. The PLE holds a massive significance in WWE with a number of top stars making their debut at the event and it is also home to some of the company's most memorable moments.

Here is everything you need to know about Survivor Series.

History of WWE Survivor Series

The creation of Survivor Series can be attributed to the success of WrestleMania III. Generating over $10 million in 1987 with around 78,000 in attendance was a massive milestone for the WWE. This led Vince McMahon to believe in the power of pay-per-view events.

This led the WWE to host the first Survivor Series the same year as WrestleMania III. The event capitalized on the Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant feud. Showcased as a continuation of their match at WM III, this drew massive attention at the time, with 21,000 in attendance for a new PPV event.

Set to be a 'Thanksgiving tradition,'?the PPVs occurred on Thanksgiving Day or Thanksgiving Eve. Survivor Series is part of WWE's Big Four, consisting of WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Royal Rumble. Today, it is the longest-running PPV behind WrestleMania.

Some of the biggest stars debuted at Survivor Series

Survivor Series has had a massive impact on WWE's history. This is because some of the biggest names in the WWE debuted at Survivor Series.

The Undertaker in 1990: The Undertaker debuted at Survivor Series as part of Ted Dibiase's team against a squad led by Dusty Rhodes. The Undertaker dominated the match before being counted out. The Deadman fittingly announced his retirement at the same PLE 30 years later.

Dwayne Johnson in 1996: On November 17, 1996, Dwayne The Rock Johnson debuted at Survivor Series 10. He was paired with Marc Mero, Jake Roberts, and The Stalker. His team took on Crush, Goldust, Jerry Lawler, and Hunter Hearst Helmsley. Johnson was the sole survivor of the match, claiming victory for his team.

Kurt Angle in 1999: The Olympic Gold Medalist, Angle faced Shawn Stasiak in a singles match. Angle won the match by pinfall after hitting? Stasiak with an Angle Slam.

The SHIELD in 2012: Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, and Roman Reigns debuted at Survivor Series 2012. They did not have a match but instead interfered in the triple-threat match. The match was between John Cena, CM Punk, and Rayback. With the no-disqualification stipulation, the interference led to Punk winning.

Sting in 2014: Despite making a massive name for himself across many wrestling promotions, Sting never joined the WWE. This would all change at the main event of Survivor Series 2014. The WCW icon showed by to help Team Cena win against Team Authority.

Memorable matches at Survivor Series

Another reason for the massive impact Survivor Series has had on the WWE is due to some of the matches. While the 36 PPVs have had some of the most memorable matches, it also contained one of the most controversial ones. The 11th annual WWE Survivor Series in 1997 would go on to live in infamy thanks to the Montreal Screwjob. Vince McMahon would screw over Bret Hart in his hometown during a title match with Shawn Michaels. By changing the pre-determined finish of the match without telling Hart, this match would be among the most discussed matches in WWE history.

Survivor Series is also known for the memorable matches that have etched themselves into the WWE Universe's minds. Some of them are as follows.

Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels (1992): The prequel to the Montreal Screwjob. Bret Hart retained his title after making Michaels tap out to the Sharpshooter

The Undertaker vs. Mankind (1996): This was the debut of Taker's 'Deadman' gimmick facing off against Mankind. Taker won the match after a brutal piledriver on a steel chair.

The Rock & John Cena vs. The Miz & R-Truth (2011): This match would lead up to The Rock vs Cena at WrestleMania 28. The twist ending with The Rock hitting Cena with the Rock Bottom was a massive crowd popper.

Brock Lesnar vs. Bill Goldberg (2016): A retelling of their disaster of a match that took place at WrestleMania 20 lasted 90 seconds. No one in the audience could've expected this squash match to be that memorable. Another masterpiece of visual storytelling by the WWE.

Brock Lesnar vs. Daniel Bryan (2018): This match was elevated as Bryan had recently come out of retirement for that year's WrestleMania. After his heel turn to win the WWE Championship from AJ Styles, Bryan found himself against The Beast. Despite his low blow to Lesnar, Bryan could not claim the win and Lesnar walked away with the victory.

Impressive records of WWE stars at Survivor Series

There have been some record holders at WWE Survivor Series. These include some of the biggest names in the WWE.

Dolph Ziggler: The show-off has had a reputation when it comes to Survivor Series. He has participated in 10 Survivor Series matches and won 7 of them.

Dwayne Johnson: After debuting at Survivor Series 1996 at Madison Square Garden, he went on an undefeated streak. During this time, he won his first WWE title at Survivor Series. Out of the 10 Survivor Series matches, he won 8.

Randy Orton: Did you know that Orton had a great run at Survivor Series up until the recent few years? Orton has been in 15 Survivor Series matches, out of which he won 9. He was the sole survivor on his team for three years in a row from 2003-2005.

John Cena: From 2003 till 2011, Cena won every Survivor Series match he's been part of. This included three elimination matches, three title matches, and even the tag match with The Rock. His streak was broken in 2012 during a triple-threat match interrupted by The SHIELD. He appeared in 11 Survivor Series matches, out of which he won 9. This included victory in four traditional Survivor Series elimination matches.

The Undertaker: Undertaker was another star who debuted in Survivor Series. He has appeared in 18 Survivor Series matches, out of which he won 13. His last Survivor Series match was in 2015 with Kane against The Wyatt Family.
