Taylor Townsend’s early life

Taylor Townsend was born in Chicago on April 16, 1996, to Gary and Sheila Townsend. Her mother played university-level tennis and she picked up a racquet at the age of six. Growing up, she idolized Martina Navratilova and tried to build her game like Navratilova's.

At age 8, she trained under Donald Young Sr. Her training required her to move to Atlanta. Following this, she moved to Boca Raton, Florida, for her USTA development program.

Taylor Townsend’s career

Townsend is currently ranked No. 132 in singles and No. 5 in doubles. She made her her Grand Slam debut in 2014 at Wimbledon and then followed by US Open and landed up losing in the opening rounds. She cracked into the top-hundred WTA ranking in the year 2015.

After experiencing a slump in her singles rankings, she again returned to the top-hundred rankings in 2017. The same year she reached her career-high ranking of World Number 64.

In 2016, she reached the US Open quarterfinals in the doubles domain.

In 2019, Townsend achieved her first-ever top-ten win. She defeated World Number four, Simona Halep, a two-time Grand Slam champion in the second round of the US Open 2019. Townsend saved match points against Halep to attain that victory. She then lost in the 4th round to eventual champion Bianca Andreescu, and the Round of 16 run is her best Grand Slam performance to date.

She has won numerous ITF titles in singles and doubles. Townsend won the Indian Wells 2018 doubles title, where she partnered with Yanina Wickmayer.

During the US Open juniors event in 2012, Townsend's request for a wildcard for the US Open main draw or the qualifying tournament was denied, about her body weight. During that time, Townsend was the top-ranked girl on the juniors circuit and she was surprised by USTA's decision.

The former tennis players Lindsay Davenport and Martina Navratilova criticized USTA's decision. Back then, USTA refused to take care of Townsend's expenses and she came to the tournament with her own expenses.

She reached the quarterfinals of the tournament. Then USTA agreed to fund Townsend's expenses as Patrick McEnroe spoke of a miscommunication.

With that controversy, Townsend split with her USTA coaches and began training under 1990 Wimbledon finalist, Zina Garrison.

Townsend's form dipped since the 2019 season, and she could not make her mark on the WTA Tour in 2020.
