Tearful Serena Williams Quits The Rogers Cup 2019 Final in The First Set

The ladies final at Rogers Cup 2019, comprised the veteran, Serena Williams and the Canadian teenager, Bianca Andreescu as the finalist. Unfortunately, Williams quit the championship match due to her back issues and the scoreline was 3-1 with the Canadian on the lead.

Andreescu becomes the first Canadian woman in 50 years to lift the Rogers Cup title. It’s her second milestone of the year alongside her title in Indian Wells 2019.

“I can’t move,” said Serena in tears to Andreescu. “Injury…I know right? I’ve been through so much already,” Andreescu replied.

Miserable For Serena…

Serena Williams opened the first with Andreescu facing a faced a break point, Williams did make an opening hold, but the Canadian quickly wrapped up her service game and broke the American’s serve for a 2-1 lead. Andreescu continued to consolidate her serve for a 3-1 lead and the former Rogers Cup champion, Serena Williams broke down in tears post that game.

Serena Williams: “Will Keep Going”

This was the first non-Slam final for Serena Williams since her Italian Open win in 2016. She has made it to three Grand Slam finals since her maternity hiatus, although she is ranked inside the top-ten rankings, the American is yet to open her title account since her comeback on the circuit. Her last win was at Australian Open 2017 when she defeated her sister, Venus Williams in the finals while she was eight-weeks pregnant.

“Serena you are truly a champion on and off the court. I know what it’s like to be injured and have to withdraw from tournaments. It wasn’t the way I expected to win,” Andreescu said.

“I’m speechless right now. This is just the beginning. I just wanna say (to everyone), thank you for all your support. Without your help, I wouldn’t have won this tournament. Thank you for that,” Bianca Andreescu addressed her home city with mixed-emotions gushing through her.
