“I Know Why”: Thomas Muster Opens Up after Parting Ways with Dominic Thiem

Hardly a month into the new decade, Dominic Thiem parted ways with his coach, Thomas Muster, midway through the Australian Open. A day after the surprising decision, Muster said that he knows the reason behind Thiem’s decision to part ways, but chose to keep it to himself.
“He’s a fine guy and likes to learn a lot,” Muster told Eurosport. “But he has also got some shortcomings he has to work on if he wants to be at the top. He has improved a lot, but he to catch up in the technical, physical and foremost in the mental area.
“To be honest I have seen myself in this role for the next two years. Why he has chosen differently – I know why, but I don’t want to say the details.”

The duo split up after just two weeks of working with each other. Thiem had said that it “did not fit” professionally and things were still good personally.
” It is like this: There are houses which look nice from the outside, wonderful from the outside, but you rarely know who lives inside,” Muster said on parting ways with Thiem.
Dominic Thiem reached his first Australian Open quarterfinals
On Monday, days after parting ways with his coach, Thiem rallied past Gael Monfils in the fourth round of the Australian Open.
The 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 win meant that Theim will play the quarterfinal of an Australian Open for the first time. His opponent in the last eight will be the winner of the fourth round match between Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios.

Thiem said that he was happy to be in the quarterfinals and expressed his excitement for the Nadal-Kyrgios encounter.

“I couldn’t be happier to be done, to be in the quarter-finals and to watch that, relax from home. I’m also very excited for that match,” Thiem said after his win against Monfils.
“Obviously it’s going to be such an entertaining contest tonight and then also in two days, it doesn’t matter who I face. So I’m really excited to watch that match and may the better one win tonight.”
