The top-ranked Canadian on the men’s tour Felix Auger-Aliassime began his season by winning a few match matches in Australia. He reached the finals in Amsterdam and lost to Gael Monfils, and his reverie for the first ATP title remains unfulfilled till date.
19-year-old Auger-Aliassime recently signed up Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) initiated by Patrick Mouratoglou in the south of France. But unfortunately, the Canadian star has pulled out of the due to injury.
What went wrong with Felix Auger-Aliassime?
He twisted his ankle during a training session on Tuesday. ”It’s nothing major, to be honest. Bad luck that it happened yesterday during training,” Duchesneau, Auger-Aliassime’s agent said. “It’s nothing serious at all. It’s just too close from the beginning of the competition to take any risk.”
He will be restarting with his training in a couple of weeks’ time. Instead, Spain’s Feliciano Lopez will be taking Aliassime’s spot in the tournament. The two skilled and top-notch NextGen players Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berrettini will be seen at the UTS event with starts on June 13, 2020.
Also, David Goffin, Alexei Popiryn, Lucas Pouille, Dustin Brown, Richard Gasquet, and Benoit Paire have signed up for the tournament.
Mouratoglou’s promotion of tennis
According to Mouratoglou, the average tennis follower is 60-year-old and the sport has not renewed its audience.
He believes that with the medium of UTS he can reach a greater number of audiences with his marketing skills. The French-Greek coach Mouratoglou aims to use the tour’s suspension in the promotion of tennis.
“The audience of tennis is getting older and older, which shows tennis doesn’t renew its fan base,” Mouratoglou said. “The fan base of tennis was created in the ‘70s and ‘80s when John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, and Bjorn Borg were playing and since then the base is getting older and older. I think it’s quite worrying for the whole industry that we’re not able to bring new fans to tennis.”
Patrick Mouratoglou is famously known as Serena Williams’ coach and has been working with her since 2012.
