The injury has been hurting the 34-years-old player for the past few months. He was playing in the round of 32 at the Vienna Open 2020 against Pablo Carreno Busta when he sensed something was wrong with him. He lost the first set but could not continue in the second set. As a result, Busta got a walkover.

“To this day I am not at all comfortable when I play tennis. I can hardly serve well and that makes me not I have hardly any options to be able to be competitive. I needed to cut this negative spiral,” said Monfils.

It is definitely not great that the Frenchman has to end his 2020 season like this. However, fans hope to see him back on the court soon.

The World No.11 managed to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open 2020 where he lost to Dominic Thiem, who was runner-up of the Grand Slam. He then went on to win the ATP Rotterdam, defeating Felix Auger Aliassime and winning the ‘Open Sue De France’ title. He was the semi-finalist at the Dubai Tennis Championship where his close friend Novak Djokovic ended his winning-streak of 12 matches.

Once tennis resumed, Monfils did not look in great touch at all. He could not even win one match at the Italian Open 2020, German Open 2020, and French Open 2020. He remains winless after the pandemic. Things were looking bad and with his news, they have become worse for him.

Monfils after the announcement said that he could not do anything in his current condition and therefore, it was the best decision.

Fans hope to see Monfils once again with full energy and enthusiasm at the Australian Open 2021. They believe that the 34-year-old still has a lot of tennis left in him.
