The French Open 2020 finally ended with Rafael Nadal winning it for the thirteenth time. Now, it’s for the St. Petersburg Open 2020. In a clash at the Round of 16, three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka defeated Evgeny Donskoy. The final scoreline of the match was 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Wawrinka won the first set with ease, but gave away easy points in the subsequent set. A similar thing happened with the Swiss in the first round of the tournament as well. He came back after losing the first set and evaluated his performance to be a ‘solid’ one.

He said, “I think, again, it was a great match. A tough opponent but my level was better from the beginning. I played a good first set and I’m happy to keep winning here. A great atmosphere, a great sort of people here tonight, and happy to play a QF. I think in the second [Donskoy] started to play a bit more aggressive, he was dictating a bit more the game and I think the level, in general, was great from both sides. I’m happy to get through. I think I played a really solid match tonight and I’m happy.”

Serving first, Wawrinka comfortably won the first game. Donskoy soon equalized the scoreline in the very next game at 1-1. After that, what fans witnessed was vintage Wawrinka.

He won five consecutive games in which he successfully broke his opponent twice. Donskoy had no answers to his amazing single-hand backhands and was stunned. Wawrinka delivered some amazing aces to win the 28-minute set 6-1.

Set-2: Comeback by Evgeny Donskoy

Just when everyone thought that the game was over for Donskoy, he decided to make the match exciting. He began by saving two break-points in the very first game. But Wawrinka kept at it with his amazing backhand winners.

It needed something extraordinary to get through Wawrinka, and Donskoy delivered just that. After a couple of long rallies and tiring games, Donskoy eventually broke service in the eighth game to lead 5-3. He didn’t allow the Swiss to regain his momentum and finally won the set 6-3.

Set-3: Wawrinka regains momentum

Hunger was clearly visible on Wawrinka’s face. He didn’t want to let it go this time. The Swiss realized his mistakes and fought back to win four of the next five games and lead the set 4-1. The margin of error for Donskoy was becoming smaller and smaller as the three-time Slam Champion inched closer to the finish line.

He tried to fight and brought the scoreline back to 4-2. But, it was too late. Wawrinka was in no mood to delay the game. Donskoy brought it back to 5-3, but Wawrinka won the match 6-1, 3-6, and 6-3 on his second match point.
