Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep’s hitting partner, Dmitrii Baskov, is now being hailed as an “Indian hero”. Moldovan tennis player Baskov came to India in January to visit Ace Tennis Academy. But with the pandemic taking a toll all over the world, he was stuck in Ahmedabad, India. Rather than regret being stranded in a foreign country, he stepped out to join a campaign to feed Ahmedabad’s poor. Baskov is involved in packing bread and rice at the Ace Tennis Academy. From there the packets are supplied to the needy people.

“My friend Pramesh Modi mentioned this (the idea of feeding the poor) and I said yes, sounds great and the next day we did it and it continued day after day,” Baskov told AFP.

“One hundred, 200, 300 packets, and then we realized we are doing some great stuff. It is not a daily desire or action, it is now a natural act of helping.”

In addition to his selfless act of humanity, Baskov also donated blood to help people suffering from thalassemia. The athlete inside him motivated to help others during these weird times. “I am a sportsman and nothing more than that but the desire to help is always with me,” he added.
