The two liege lords of tennis, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have unprecedented records on the tennis tour. Besides their singles prestige, they have also won Olympics gold medals on the doubles circuit. Which also proves their dominant prowess in doubles tennis. At Laver Cup 2017, the two rivals were asked about their doubles aspirations in professional tennis.

“Yeah, that’s a great idea (laughter). Are you going to become Swiss, as well, maybe, and then we can play doubles together at the Olympics? Or I will become Spaniard? I don’t know,” the Swiss maestro Roger Federer joked.

But on a serious note, both Nadal and Federer aren’t considering playing doubles tennis together anytime in the future, or also when they retire from the singles circuit. “No, that won’t happen. Not from my side,” Roger said.

Nadal: “Well, if don’t happen from your side, it not gonna work for us.”

Federer: “I don’t think so. I don’t want to kill your expectations.”

Nadal: “Well, yeah, I was… (Smiling.) I don’t think gonna be a good idea. I think we are singles players at the end of the day, so it’s tough to imagine that way we keep playing doubles after we stop playing singles, no. Not a good idea.”

“Well, the first thing was an unforgettable day for both of us. After all the history that we have behind us, like rivals, to be together with the same part of the court, fighting for a team is something that I think we really enjoyed a lot,” Nadal said.

They were also scheduled to play doubles tennis at Laver Cup 2019, but due to Rafa’s inflamed wrist, their match couldn’t get underway.
