Novak Djokovic, for the first time, lost in straight sets in the quarters of the Vienna Open 2020. The 25-year-old Lorenzo Sonego defeated the Serbian legend 6-2, 6-1, and shocked the entire tennis world.  It was one of the worst defeats for the World No. 1. However, he later claimed that he was completely satisfied with the result and achieved what he had come to the tournament for.

Djoker needed two wins to finish the year 2020 as the World No. 1. He got those two victories and after that, it looked as if he really didn’t care about the rest of the tournament. It was this attitude which didn’t go down too well with the Vienna Open tournament director, Straka. Thus, he responded quickly to Djokovic’s statements.

“I find such statements unnecessary,” said a frustrated Straka. “Even if you would think so, you don’t say that in any press conference.”  Straka claimed that even if Djokovic thought this way, it should not have come out in the open.

It was certainly a mammoth task to convince the World No. 1 to come and play at the Vienna Open 2020. Straka took the responsibility on himself, and after a lot of hardships, Djokovic finally agreed to play at the tournament. Earlier, Straka had revealed what made Djokovic come to Vienna and what he thought after that.

“That [Djoker’s hunt for Federer‘s No.1 record] was always my speculation, thank God it worked. He can make 500 free points, so he will definitely be fully motivated,” said an enthusiastic Straka earlier.

Straka is certainly upset and finds those comments unnecessary because he wanted Djokovic to play with much more spirit. He even tried to persuade World No. 2 Rafael Nadal but couldn’t convince him. With only Djoker coming to play from the ‘Big Three’, he definitely had bigger expectations from him as his statements revealed.
