Roger Federer Fined At US Open 2009
In the final of the 2009 US Open, Roger Federer faced Juan Martin del Potro. Towards the end of the third set, the Argentine went way beyond the two-second limit for a challenge. This infuriated Roger and he lashed out at the umpire saying,
“You have two seconds. He took 10 seconds. He does it all the time. You can’t allow that stuff to happen. Don’t you have any rules in there?”

While Federer’s tone here was not great, these statements are not what got him into trouble. During the heated exchange, the umpire asked him to be quiet and in response, Roger said, “Don’t tell me when to be quiet, okay? When I want to talk, I talk. I don’t give a s*** what you say.”
After this outburst, the Swiss Maestro was fined $1500 by the USTA. Clearly, this wasn’t his best moment.
Federer Fined $3000 At Australian Open
At the 2020 Australian Open, against Tennys Sandgren, Roger was heard by a lineswoman using ‘audible obscenity’. She reported it to the chair umpire who gave the Swiss Maestro a code violation in the third set. After the match, Federer was fined $3000 for this.

Later, in the post-matched interview, the 20-time Grand Slam champion addressed the fine saying, “Honestly, to be frustrated at one point for over, I don’t know, 15 hours… I think it’s normal. I found it a bit tough. It’s not like I’m known to throw around words and whatever. It’s not like the whole stadium heard it either. But no problem, I’ll accept it.”
The Swiss Maestro was also surprised by this fine since he spoke in multiple languages. Talking about this, he said, “Clearly she speaks mixed. Didn’t know that. Next time I got to check the linespeople.”
Fans were surely not happy to see Federer receive a fine. However, they will be glad that Roger does not lose his cool too easily and so has not been fined as many others on Tour. He has kept his emotions under control very well and hopefully, he will continue to do so for the rest of his career.
