“Would Stick With Tennis as It Is”: Alex de Minaur Disagrees With Novak Djokovic Over Best-of-5 Debate

In the tennis world, Grand Slams are the only event where matches are played in a best-of-5 format. It has been like this for a long time but recently, at the 2020 ATP Finals, Novak Djokovic advocated a switch to 3-set tennis. This was opposed by many players, which is why Alex De Minaur has given his opinion. He said,
“There are things that make tennis special, like for example the 5 sets in Grand Slam, it is something good. The problem is people who don’t want to watch five-hour games, but I don’t know what the solution is. The distinction must be drawn between whether tennis is a spectator sport or a player’s sport.
“Now they have started doing different things, but I don’t know if I agree with them completely. The viewer likes to see something different every now and then, but I would stick with tennis as it is.”

One of the biggest supporters of 5-set tennis is Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal. He felt that it is part of the history of tennis and it is something that shouldn’t change ever.
Another player who shared Rafa’s opinion was Alexander Zverev. He used the example of the Davis Cup to justify his stance as he said, “You don’t change the history of tennis like that. We did it for the Davis Cup, we saw the result. Tennis is a physical sport. That’s what we train for, we go to the gym.”

Clearly, there are many people supporting 5-set tennis and many people who are against it. The governing bodies of tennis will listen to arguments from both sides and make their decision based on it. Until then, we will continue to see the traditional five-set matches at the Slams.
