US Open Releases Its Statement After Wimbledon’s Cancelation

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the cancelation of Wimbledon for the first time since World War II in 1945. Making it the first instance when the organizers called off the grass-court major since the beginning of the Open era. Even though many tennis tournaments have been canceled since March 2020, the Flushing Meadows tournament, US Open plans to go ahead with their schedule.

Statement by US Open

Right after the cancelation of the 134th Championships, the US Open stated: “We understand the unique circumstances facing the All England Lawn and Tennis Club and the reasoning behind the decision to cancel the 2020 Wimbledon Championships. At this time, the USTA still plans to host the US Open as scheduled. And we continue to hone plans to stage the tournament.”

New York City has recorded 83,000 positive cases of coronavirus so far. With the pandemic affecting the USA gravely, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center which is home to the US Open, has laid 350 hospital beds. The Louis Armstrong Stadium will be used for the preparation of 25,000 packages of meals for the patients.

“The USTA is carefully monitoring the rapidly changing environment surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.” the organizers said in a statement.

“And it is preparing for all contingencies,” the tournament further continued with their statement.

“We also rely on the USTA’s Medical Advisory Group as well as governmental and security officials to ensure that we have the broadest understanding of this fluid situation.”

The USTA will take a decision keeping in mind the well-being of players, fans, and all involved in the tournament.

US Open 2020 will take place between, August 31 to September 13, 2020. The qualifiers will get underway on August 24. And right after the Flushing Meadows event, French Open will commence on September 20.
