Miami Open Release Statement Regarding Coronavirus After Cancellation of Indian Wells 2020

One of the biggest events in tennis, BNP Paribas Open got canceled after confirmation of one coronavirus case in its whereabouts. But its sister tournament in Florida, Miami Open 2020 will be taking place as per its schedule.

However numerous events in the city of Miami have been canceled or postponed. For instance, the Ultra Music Festival was scheduled from March 20-22, but they will return in 2021.

The Archdiocese of Miami has canceled all Catholic Athletic League activities. Also, the Winter Music Conference scheduled in March has been postponed.

But surprising, James Blake’s tournament Miami Open seemed to be unaffected by the sprouting adversities of coronavirus.

Statement by Miami Open

“The 2020 Miami Open is moving forward as scheduled, March 23 – April 5,” the tournament announced. “Safety remains a top priority. We are monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely with local, state and federal officials and health organizations in the lead up to the tournament.”

“In addition, we are working with ATP and WTA tours recommended best practices and following CDC guidelines closely to provide a safe environment for fans, players and staff.”

Recently, Florida health officials released their statement. They have recommended the International travelers to remain in quarantine for two weeks once they come back to Florida(as stated by Tampa Bay Times).

In a way, the cancelation of Indian Wells 2020 has prevented the on-going virus pandemic from escalating in Palm Springs. Also, the cancelation has ensured the safety of numerous tennis professionals, fans and staff who make the event successful.

Tournament director Tommy Haas is working on the rescheduling of the big event of tennis. With the Tokyo Olympics coming up in July, the tennis players have a tight 2020 calendar throughout the year. That ultimately makes the rescheduling the Californian tournament even more challenging.

“We are prepared to hold the tournament on another date and will explore options. But the tournament calendar is very crowded so it’s not clear if this is realistic,” Haas stated.

Presently the tennis professionals are staying in Indian Wells. With Miami Open releasing their statement, they are soon expected to fly to Florida.
