Earlier on Monday, the Australian and Candian Olympics committees become the first ones to pull out the Tokyo Olympics 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic. They announced they won’t be sending their athletes for the Olympics if the games took place as per schedule in 2020. As the health and welfare of their athletes are top-priority for them.
“We’ve had to make a call now because of the situation here in Australia and other parts of the world,” AOC CEO Matt Carroll told reporters in Sydney on Monday. “But the IOC is still working through their final decision-making. It has to be a summer Games, it’s an appropriate amount of time. However, that’s a decision for the International Olympic Committee,” AOC added.
However, a few hours later, the veteran International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound announced the postponement of the Tokyo Games. The quadrennial event is likely to be held in the year 2021, after the complete eradication of COVID-19.

Tokyo Olympics 2020 – “Postponement has been decided”
“On the basis of the information, the IOC has, the postponement has been decided,” Pound said told USA TODAY. “The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know. It will come in stages. We will postpone this and begin to deal with all the ramifications of moving this, which are immense.”
The Olympic Committee is yet to decide a new date for the big event in the 2021 calendar. When the outbreak of coronavirus was restricted to just the eastern part of the world, there were talks about shifting Olympics 2020 to London, UK.
But with the invisible detrimental foe expanding from one continent to another, the Olympic Games were compelled to a postponement.
As of Monday, more than 1000 people are infected in Japan by the lethal virus, and Tokyo has recorded more than 130 cases. The patients of Tokyo are docked on a ship, in the outskirts of the city.
