It was Australian Open 2019, where Rafael Nadal was playing some phenomenal tennis, reaching the finals without dropping a set. Also, that year Nadal stepped into the tournament with a reworked serve. The deadly new weapon withered away any hope his opponents had of stopping him, until the final.
After his second-round victory over home favorite Matthew Ebden, Nadal had a hilarious exchange of words with a spectator in the Rod Laver Arena. Towards the end, Rafa was giggling during the match and apparently, a spectator made him smile. Referring to the same, John McEnroe asked him what had made him smile in the middle of the match.
But, before the Spaniard could answer, a boisterous fan interrupted and poured out his love and affection for Rafa. Immediately, McEnroe barged in and said, “quiet, let him answer.”
Soon after, with a priceless smile on his face, Nadal responded to the fan saying: “I don’t know if you drinking some tequilas or what?”
The entire Rod Laver Arena including McEnroe broke into laughter. The fan was on cloud nine having been addressed directly by Rafa.
World Number two Nadal has had numerous funny interactions with the crowd, especially on the biggest courts of tennis. Once, at the Australian Open, a woman from the crowd yelled: “Hey Nadal, will you marry?” The entire stadium was boisterous with joy, and Rafa tried his best to control his expressions. But, before he went on to receive the next ball, the lady earned Nadal’s smile.
Also, at US Open 2009, a fan bounced on the court after Nadal won his match. The fan showered his affection on Rafa by hugging and kissing him. But, later for breaking the rules, the fan was imprisoned.
