Alexander Bublik wasn’t a fan of the Laver Cup until last year. Describing the tournament as an exhibition event, he claimed that team captains prefer choosing players who can converse well in English. But his opinion on the tournament has changed now after he recently made his maiden appearance for Team World. He credited the team captain Andre Agassi and the rest of the lineup for helping him understand the importance of the event.

“The experience at the Laver Cup was incredible, it was very different from what I had seen on TV,” he said in the post-tournament press conference. “When you watch the games on TV, you think that there are no points at stake and that everything is just a demonstration, but everything changes when you are part of a team, with all these emotions linked to winning. From day one, I felt that emotion, thanks to the energy of Andre Agassi and the rest of the gang.”
“We kept talking about how we were going to win this or that. It’s a very serious competition, I’m not afraid to say that, even if many fans accuse me of changing my mind. Of course, it has a little exhibition aspect, but it’s a very competitive exhibition. It’s crazy how competitive we all are there, you see it every time one of the guys won.”
These comments are way different from what Bublik had said about the Laver Cup last year. The Kazakh left many surprised with his opinion about the tournament that was launched in 2017 by Roger Federer and his long-time agent Tony Godsick.
“Exhibition? Of course the Laver Cup is one. Does it give ranking points? No. So it’s an exhibition,” he told Bounces in 2025. “I guess I would have to be South American or (North) American to play it. I think the captains always choose those who speak English. They think the ‘World’ is America.”
However, Bublik’s first appearance at the Laver Cup didn’t quite go as planned. He lost one singles match and two doubles encounters as Team Europe triumphed 13-5. Bublik first came up against Rafael Jodar in a singles clash. Though the match was initially expected to be a close affair, the Spaniard racked up a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 victory.

A similar story followed in doubles as the duo of Bublik and Taylor Fritz suffered a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Carlos Alcaraz and Jakub Mensik. The most disappointing result of them all came on the final day of the event when Team World desperately needed a win, but Bublik and Brandon Nakashima failed to deliver.
They suffered a 6-4, 7-6 defeat to Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud. This result saw Team Europe take a commanding 10-5 lead. Zverev would later put the tie to bed with his 7-6, 6-3 win over Learner Tien. Overall, it proved to be a forgettable tournament for Team World, who had won three of the last four editions coming into this year’s event.
While it was just his first appearance at the Laver Cup, Bublik must have wanted to perform way better than he did. He wasn’t able to improve his form at the China Open either, as Jakub Mensik handed him a third-straight singles defeat.
Alexander Bublik suffers an early exit at the China Open against Jakub Mensik
Mensik defeated Bublik 6-4, 7-6 in the Round of 32 at the China Open. This was the third time in a row that the Czech reigned supreme in the matchup, and he now has a 3-1 lead in the H2H record. It was a frustrating outing for Bublik, who even clashed with the chair umpire at one point in the first set.
This result means that Bublik is now on a three-match losing streak in singles competition. His last victory came in the second round of the US Open, where he defeated Adrian Mannarino in straight sets.
While his singles campaign at the China Open may have come to an early end, Bublik is still competing in the doubles draw. He and Shang Juncheng have reached the semifinals after recording two victories.
They first defeated Arthur Rinderknech and Francisco Cerundolo 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 and followed that up by triumphing 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 against Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni. Bublik and Juncheng will be up against the Dutch pairing of David Pel and Sander Arends in the next round.
