Despite losing his second Cincinnati Open final, Frances Tiafoe remained graceful in defeat. The match went to three sets, but the home favorite could offer little resistance in the deciding set, as he was visibly struggling with an injury. However, brushed off any serious injury concerns ahead of the US Open, praising his opponent, Arthur Fils’ abilities.
“No, I mean that’s not important. [Fils] won his first Masters 1000. It’s not about how I feel, it’s his Sunday,” said Tiafoe in the post-match press conference. “Um, I’m dealing with a lot of things this week. I mean, my hip was bothering me a little bit, but that’s neither here nor there.”
It was Fils who had the faster start in the match, breaking Tiafoe in the American’s first service game of the match. That one break of serve was enough for the Frenchman to close out the first set 6-3. However, Tiafoe was not letting the match get away that easily as he ran away with the second set, winning it 6-1.
It looked like Tiafoe had all the momentum, but the home favorite called for a medical timeout after the second set. The American received some treatment on his hip, after which he took the court for the third set. However, it was clear to anyone watching the match that Tiafoe was hampered in his movement and lost accuracy on his shots. He made twelve unforced errors in the set, which saw Fils win the deciding set 6-0, which was somewhat anticlimactic to a seemingly interesting match.
Even though he lost the final, the run that Tiafoe had in Cincinnati was in no way less extraordinary, given that the American had wrist surgery to remove a cyst just a few days before the tournament. The World No. 23 was also suffering from cramps after his quarterfinal win, and had a very short recovery time before his semifinal, which was yet another challenge he overcame in the week.
However, the Cincinnati run, which has brought Tiafoe close to the Top 10 once again, will give the American a lot of confidence going into the US Open.
Frances Tiafoe Is on the Verge of Getting Back in the Top 10
Tiafoe‘s Cincinnati run has seen the American be on the verge of re-entering the Top 10 once again. The American earned 550 points with his runner-up finish at the tournament, because he was defending 100 points from last year. This has seen him rise to No. 12 in the live Rankings, now almost 800 points behind Taylor Fritz, who is in 10th.
Going into the US Open, Tiafoe will have a possibility of entering the Top 10, should he make a deep run in New York. The American does not have too many points to defend at Flushing Meadows as he made a third-round exit last year. However, the US Open is by far Tiafoe’s best Slam, with a 24-11 record in New York, including two semifinal runs in 2022 and 2024.
Should Tiafoe get back into the Top 10, it will be the second time the American would have achieved the prestigious feat, having made his Top 10 debut in 2023. That season remains one of the best seasons for Tiafoe, as he won two titles, the most he has won in a single season. He received his best Slam seeding that season, being the tenth seed at Wimbledon.
With his Cincinnati run this year, Tiafoe has ensured the 11th seed for New York, which will help him avoid the top-ranked players till the fourth round, giving him a potentially favorable draw. The American has always liked playing at home events, as six of his thirteen career finals have come in the States.
Despite injury concerns, Tiafoe is having one of his best seasons on Tour in 2026, with a 37-16 record. The Cincinnati final was the third for the American this year, with him winning the title in Halle earlier and finishing runner-up in Acapulco.
