It’s a dream for most young tennis players to be able to represent their nation on a global stage, and 17-year-old Emerson Jones has received that opportunity. The young Australian came into contention after world No. 31 Maya Joint was ruled out of the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup qualifier against Great Britain.

Australia’s No. 1-ranked female player sustained a back injury in her first-round loss against Jacqueline Cristian at Indian Wells. She had won the first set 6-0, but, struggling with her back, she lost the next two sets 6-2 and 7-5. This even led to withdrawing from the doubles events at the tennis paradise. Currently, she is rehabilitating and hoping to be fit for the clay court season ahead of Roland Garros.
Her replacement is a 17-year-old from the Gold Coast who could become the youngest player in history to represent Australia in a BJK Cup tie in Melbourne. The current squad, consisting of Talia Gibson, Kimberly Birrell, Storm Hunter, and Ellen Perez, will compete at John Cain Arena on April 10-11.
The call-up came at an unfortunate time, but it’s truly well-earned for Jones, and the outcome could even be a blessing in disguise for the Australians. Aside from her injury, Joint has not had the best season so far, with a record of 2-8. In the last four tournaments, she has exited in the first round each time.
On the other hand, Jones is ranked a career-high No. 136 in the WTA standings. She is also the first Australian in 25 years, since Jelena Dokic in 1998, to reach No. 1 on the junior ITF rankings in 2024. That same year, she was a finalist at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon and was named Junior Athlete of the Year at the Newcombe Medal in 2023 and 2024.

Additionally, she has gained considerable experience on the WTA tour this year. She played in her home Grand Slam and later appeared at the Sunshine Double. She even won a match at the Miami Gardens but was eliminated in the second round by the ninth seed, Elina Svitolina. Her win-loss record for the year is 12-7, which is much better than the performance of the senior pro, Maya Joint.
Jones made clear just how much the call-up means to her.
“To get my number—most girls dream of that,” she said. “It’s going to be a great experience and really fun. They’re all really great girls on the team, and I look up to them a lot. I’m excited to train with them and just be in the team with them.”
Even the former tennis player and current team captain showed belief in the teenager.
Sam Stosur backs Emerson Jones to thrive on the big stage
Eight-time Grand Slam champion Sam Stosur publicly spoke about backing Emerson Jones and believes that she is ready for this next step in her young career.
“Emerson has been able to test herself against some of the best players in the world at the Australian Open and other big tournaments already this year. This opportunity will certainly make her an even better player and is another step in her very young career,” Stosur said.
“I have no doubt this will be the first of many times that she represents Australia — she’s going to love it,” she added.
The match-up against Great Britain is a crucial one, as the winner will advance to the eight-nation finals in China in September. The match will see a usual best-of-five rubber format across both days, with four singles matches and one doubles match, determining who goes through.
This is the first time in 15 years that Melbourne is hosting a BJK Cup; therefore, all the players in the squad would be playing against their home crowd in BJK for the first time. Now, Jones, who has been striving to break into the world’s top 100, will don the Australian jersey alongside the players she admires.
This is the next big step in her career, which can accelerate her growth. She has received an opportunity; it’s up to Jones to make that chance count.
