He said in an interview, “My family didn’t have the money to continue. It’s too expensive when you’re a kid then and a lot of pressure to my parents to be there every weekend, go travelling.”

Rise from the bottom

When asked how he could afford tennis, he got emotional and somehow resisted crying.

Thereafter, he said, “My mother sacrificed a lot so I could play tennis. My father too. My family is not rich. I came from a small town. So my coaches helped me a lot. The tennis classes were cheaper for me. They did it because they saw potential in me. I had a sponsor, Artengo.”

“So, my parents didn’t have to buy strings or racquets. They could save the money to eat, to live. To keep a good quality of life. We had like a grant to pay for the fees, to travel and play tournaments. I remember it was hard for my parents. I owe everything to my mother and father. Even today, I wouldn’t be where I am without them,” Fokina added.
