The gender debate, including the sensitive topic of transgender athlete participation, has swept across different sports, including tennis and the WNBA. With protests going on in the WNBA, one tennis insider took a sarcastic jibe at fans from the Indiana Fever and New York Liberty game for their stance on the issue.

“A good reminder about who actually cares about women’s sports, and who is opportunistically using it for irrelevant agendas,” said Ben Rothernberg on X.
The video that has surfaced on social media showed people from both sides of the argument, supporters as well as detractors of transgender athletes in women’s sports. However, when people were asked to name even five WNBA players, most stumbled in their answers, with most able to name only Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark.
The naming of Cunningham has its own significance, as the Indiana Fever player recently voiced her objections towards transgender participation in female sports. Cunningham’s comments received support from both supporters and critics of the issue, who have come in large numbers to Indiana games.
In tennis, the transgender issue recently came under the spotlight as the WTA introduced a one-time gene-testing method to determine the eligibility of female players to participate in Tour-level events. The new method is based on detecting the presence of the SRY gene, which indicates male development, and bars the player from playing on any WTA Tour.
The new ruling in tennis comes as a stricter policy compared to the old ones, which had an accommodation for female players with high testosterone levels, as long as they did not get over the recommended levels. On the other hand, the WNBA has no established biological metric to determine gender eligibility, but rather depends on legal gender identity and has no active testing methods.
The absence of more compact rules for gender eligibility has led some players, like Cunningham, to speak out on the issue in the WNBA, and the WTA has also seen its share of supporters of the new testing policies. The likes of Aryna Sabalenka and former greats like Martina Navratilova have welcomed the initiative. The current World No.1 supported the WTA’s move, not shying away from admitting the biological differences between male and female athletes.
“I think it’s really important to keep the fairness in our tour,” she said in a press conference before the National Bank Open. “It’s obviously, biologically, the men are way stronger than women, so I feel like it would be not really fair for the woman to compete against biological man.”
Aside from Sabalenka, even Jessica Pegula has been supportive of the new testing, highlighting the transparency and efficiency of the tests that have already started. Meanwhile, Coco Gauff had a more balanced outlook on the situation, welcoming the new testing methods as a necessary means to ensure fairness while also voicing her support for the trans community as a whole.
