USTA Says Citi Open’s Cancelation Will Have ‘No Impact’ on US Open 2020’s Staging

Citi Open in Washington D.C. was the tournament wherein the tennis season was scheduled to be resumed has been canceled. It was of no surprise as the cancelation was due to the growing numbers of coronavirus. With the pandemic failing to settle the organizers of Washington Open called off their tournament. However, the elite event in New York, US Open 2020 has no plans to cancel its this year’s edition.

On Tuesday, Citi Open released its official statement and USTA addressed it to be an unfortunate decision. But, simultaneously they stated it would have ‘no impact’ on the occurrence of US and Cincinnati Open. (Both tournaments are scheduled to take place at Flushing Meadows).

Hence, the US and Western & Southern Open will be taking place as per schedule, even if the situations are highly unplayable.

US Open 2020’s official statement

“This decision in no way impacts the US Open or the Western & Southern Open. The USTA will create a safe and controlled environment for players and everyone else involved in both tournaments that mitigates health risks that were approved by the State of New York and also conform to the standards put forth by New York City and the federal government,” they released its statement following Citi Open’s cancellation.

They will be carrying out the tournament with all the guiding principles. It would principally include all the safety and healthcare measures.

Even if the tournament gets underway, former champions like Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka do not show any interest to travel to the western part of the world from Europe. The two elite players on the men’s tour have kick-started their training on clay, and they seem to be more inclined towards the European clay-court swing.

However, World Number one Novak Djokovic earlier showed resistance to play at the Flushing Meadows Major due to their strict safety measures. But presently he has been seen practicing on the hard-courts and preparing for the New York Major.

It shows that Djokovic might be traveling to New York. Also World Number three Dominic Thiem might fly to the US for the American Slam if the tournament takes place as per schedule.
