Lorenzo Musetti‘s luck with injuries keeps on getting worse. He has already missed several tournaments due to physical setbacks, and now another one has been added to the tally. Musetti was scheduled to begin his Asian swing with the Japan Open, and his first-round opponent had also been decided. But a new injury has halted the Italian’s plans, and he will now have to spend time on the sidelines again.

Musetti has revealed that he has suffered a small fracture in the ring finger of his right hand. Having not played the tournament last year as well, he will be gutted to miss it for the second consecutive year.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete in Tokyo this year due to a small fracture in my right ring finger that I sustained during a tennis practice,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “I’m obviously very disappointed, especially because I was really looking forward to playing in front of my Japanese fans and experiencing the incredible atmosphere of Tokyo once again.”

With the Japan Open now out of the picture, Musetti is targeting a return at the Shanghai Masters, which will begin on October 7. This indicates that the finger injury may not be that serious.

“I’ll do everything I can over the next few days to recover and be ready to compete in Shanghai. Thank you for all your support and messages. I hope to see you very soon. See you soon, Japan!” he concluded.

Musetti has been replaced by lucky loser Jaime Faria in the main draw. He will be taking on Arthur Fery in the first round. Fortunately for Musetti, he won’t be losing any points due to his withdrawal from Tokyo. But he is already down to No. 25 and will lose even more ground if he doesn’t fully recover soon.

Injuries have led to a decline in Musetti’s form. He has a win-loss record of 20-11 this season and has won no titles either. The Italian’s most recent disappointment came at the US Open, where he was eliminated in the second round by Dane Sweeny. With him being out of the ATP Finals race and only a few tournaments remaining in the season, Musetti would want to finish on a high.

His main goal now will be to return to full fitness, which is something he hasn’t been able to do for longer periods of time this season. Injuries have been a major thorn in his side since the very start of the season and are just not ready to leave his shadow yet.

Musetti’s first setback of the year came at the Australian Open. He was leading Novak Djokovic comfortably by 6-4, 6-3, 1-3 in the quarterfinals, when he suffered a severe leg injury. This forced him to retire from the match. Medical tests later confirmed that it was a psoas muscle tear. The injury kept him out for over a month until the Indian Wells Masters.

However, the return didn’t quite go well, as not only did Musetti get eliminated in the first round, but he also suffered a right arm injury, which resulted in his withdrawal from the Miami Open. The 24-year-old returned at the Monte Carlo Masters, but it wasn’t long before another setback sidelined him.

Musetti picked up a left thigh injury at the Italian Open while taking on Casper Ruud. This led to a 6-3, 6-1 defeat and sidelined him for almost three months. As a result, Musetti missed the entire grass-court season before eventually returning at the Citi Open.

The North American swing didn’t go quite well for him as he only won seven matches in four tournaments. His best result was reaching the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters. It remains to be seen whether Musetti will be able to improve his form once he returns to the court.
